daura in rockbridge

This gallery presents works by Pierre Daura, in public or private collections, that show Rockbridge County scenes or people, as well as other Daura images that are privately owned in Rockbridge. The gallery is an appendix to the article by Lynn Lowry Leech, “Pierre Daura: Local Treasure,” Rockbridge Epilogues 53.

Daura lived in Rockbridge Baths from 1939 until his death in 1976, almost half his life and certainly his most productive years. Yet he is not celebrated nearly as energetically in Rockbridge as he is in Europe and elsewhere in the United States. His paintings hang in major cathedrals in Spain and in the Pompidou Center in France. The Georgia Museum of Art has 600 of his works, donated by Martha Randolph Daura, daughter of Pierre and wife, Louise Heron Blair Daura, in a study center named for him. The University of Lynchburg has almost 300 of his works in its Daura Museum of Art. The Taubman Museum in Roanoke always has some of its 46 Daura holdings on display.

In Rockbridge County, there is no public recognition beyond a standard-issue highway marker on Maury River Road.

Ms. Leech’s article and this gallery are a start at correcting that imbalance.

As additional images become known or available to us, we will add to this online gallery. The images here are not museum-quality reproductions and they are made available only for online browsing. We extend boundless gratitude to the families and organizations that have given us permission to show their wonderful Daura treasures.
